About Us

Lifestyles for the Disabled began operating in 1994 through the collaboration of parents, community organizations, local business people and a group of developmentally disabled adults (program participants). Each group recognized the need to develop programs that provide participants with realistic work settings and experiences within the Staten Island community and beyond.

The Red group paid a visit to Rocky owner of a 1967 Chevy Camaro. The group was able to checkout all the features of the 38,000 mile 60’s muscle car and loved the sound of the 327 cubic inch engine when the car fired up. Danny said “ that sounds awesome “ Joey liked the Chevy Bowtie emblem located on the gas cap mounted above the rear bumper. Nick B was checking out the raised white letters on the tires and thought they were really cool. Andre commented “ look at that” at the square shape of the gear selector as he was checking out the interior. The group asked how long Rocky owned the car and was told he purchased it 3 years ago. Programs for Disabled Adults in Staten Island - Lifestyles for the Disabled

Developmental disabilities are challenging for the individuals and families impacted by them, but that doesn’t mean they can’t pursue a fulfilling lifestyle. For adults with developmental disabilities, programs offered by Lifestyles for the Disabled provide unique and personalized support. Based in Staten Island, New York, we help to foster independence and promote community involvement through recreational, occupational, and service opportunities.

Our Impactful Programs

From work experiences to travel and entertainment, all programs are managed by highly trained staff and encourage disabled adults to live their lives to the fullest. Our offerings include special events, two cafes, and a variety of programs to fill different purposes and needs, including:

Day Habilitation

Our Day Habilitation program enriches the lives of participants with opportunities to engage with their community creatively, physically, and socially. We offer personalized activities including fine arts and crafts, physical fitness, community service, leisure, education opportunities, and occupational experience.

Respite

While respite gives caretakers and family members some time off and assurance that their loved one is in good hands, participants are given an opportunity for socialization and recreation alongside their peers. Adult and high school participants can enjoy unique on-site opportunities, including athletic games, art, crafting, and cooking. Respite also offers community outings, day trips, resort nights, and even short camping trips.

Supplemental Day Habilitation (OPTS)

Our Supplemental Day Habilitation program is designed to help disabled people aged 14 to 21 prepare for the transition from school to adulthood. The program builds life and occupational skills through a variety of opportunities. There are also optional weekend trips so teenagers and young adults can enjoy a wider variety of experiences.

Community Habilitation

In Community Habilitation, a participant works one-on-one with a staff member to develop an individualized program. The participant sets their own goals to develop skills, build independence, and integrate with their community. In order to achieve those goals, the staff member helps construct a custom schedule with unique activities and opportunities tailored for the individual.

Employment Options and Services

Our Employment Services include a variety of options to prepare participants for employment and to help them succeed in the workplace. The program teaches pre-employment skills and develops useful abilities like problem-solving, time management, work ethic, and conflict resolution to help participants excel in their work. We also provide job coaching, paid internship opportunities, and other tools to help participants find and retain jobs.

A History of Serving Staten Island

Lifestyles for the Disabled was founded in 1994 as a collaboration between local families, community organizations, businesses, and disabled adults. It was designed to address the overwhelming need for programs in Staten Island that provide experience, enrichment, and realistic work settings to disabled adults. Though we started with only four participants, the program currently serves over 400 developmentally disabled individuals.
