Day Habilitation in Staten Island, New York
At Lifestyles for the Disabled in Staten Island, New York, we strive to help adults with disabilities live a life as rich and fulfilling as they deserve. In our Day Habilitation program, participants enjoy stimulating activities that spark joy and foster a sense of independence. We hope that by providing opportunities for quality learning, travel, entertainment, and positive work, we can promote individuality and productivity amongst the people we serve.
Wide Range of Offerings
Designed to support and engage disabled adults in our community, the Day Habilitation program at Lifestyles for the Disabled provides innovative programming, professional staff, and chances for community involvement. In the middle of it all, we keep our focus on individual abilities and independence. Our activity offerings span enriching ways that participants can express creativity, exercise, and socially interact, including the following:
Fine Arts and Crafts
We believe that everyone deserves access to the arts. Our diverse creative arts programs include classes that teach art skills and opportunities to create beautiful handcrafted items. Participants can try their hand at:
- Sketching
- Painting
- Jewelry-making
- Ceramics
- Woodworking
- Crocheting and needlecrafts
- Wreath-making
- Card-making
We also offer a music program with classes in music theory, singing, and drumming. Participants can even participate in dance classes, which teach movement and technique in a variety of dance styles.
Physical Fitness and Recreation
Adults should be able to improve their fitness and engage in physical fun, regardless of the difficulties imposed by a disability. At our Willowbrook campus, we offer a physical fitness and recreation program with individualized supports for our participants. Working with sensitivity to their disabilities, we also offer an aquatic recreation program for people who love the water or find activities too strenuous on land.
Community Service and Partnerships
To promote involvement in the community, Lifestyles for the Disabled has forged partnerships with local establishments like SI Zoo, Snug Harbor, Richmond Town, and many others. Participants may clean churches and offices, maintain grounds, gardens, and neighborhood spaces, or help seniors. It’s an excellent opportunity to accomplish something meaningful within the community that participants can be proud of.
Occupational Education
Participants can gain hands-on work experience as well. Our Lifestyles Caffe teaches participants culinary skills, including how to meal plan, cook healthy foods, and serve patrons. Other opportunities for education include greenhouse skills, media instruction, and social skills through our Mentors in Training program.
We also have partnered with local colleges, including SUNY Empire, St. John’s University, and Wagner College, so our participants can pursue further education that can help them find meaningful employment.
